Halloween Stuff I Want to Buy, But Shouldn't

Some ghosts, a skeleton and several things I can absolutely justify.

I already own Halloween decorations.

There are real pumpkins that I get from Sprouts every year. There are ghosts. There are bins of seasonal nonsense that spend eleven months of the year in storage.

And yet, every October, I find myself looking at more Halloween stuff.

Do I need another serving bowl? No.

Would a tiny ghost-covered spoon rest make cooking dinner more enjoyable? Possibly.

The problem is that Halloween merchandise has gotten very good. And apparently, I have very little resistance to something that is both festive and vaguely useful.

Here's what's caught my eye this year. Some of it has already made its way into my house.

I'm not proud. I'm also not sorry.

1. Crate & Barrel Ghost Spoon Rest

It's a spoon rest. With ghosts on it.

Do I already own a spoon rest? Yes.

Does that spoon rest celebrate Halloween? No.

I think we've established the problem.

2. Geometry Casper Boo Tea Towel

I've become a Geometry towel person, which is a sentence I never expected to say about myself.

But they're genuinely useful, they wash beautifully, and switching out a kitchen towel is possibly the lowest-effort way to acknowledge a holiday.

This is not sponsored. I genuinely LOVE these towels.

This one is black with little white ghosts.

Practical? Yes.

Necessary? Let's not get carried away.

3. Rifle Paper Co. Halloween Parade Serving Bowl

This is where my self-control started to deteriorate.

I love a serving bowl. I especially love a serving bowl that can hold chips, popcorn, candy or whatever else I've decided constitutes dinner during a Halloween movie.

And this one has an entire Halloween parade marching around it.

It's melamine, so it's practical for a party with kids running around.

Did I need it?

Absolutely not.

Did I buy it?

Obviously.

4. Rifle Paper Co. Halloween Parade Serving Platter

And because apparently buying the bowl wasn't enough, I also bought the matching platter.

In my defense, a platter and a bowl perform two completely different jobs.

One holds chips.

The other holds the things you eat with the chips. Or cookies. Or cheese!

This is called having a system.

5. Target Poseable Skeleton

There are two kinds of Halloween decorations.

The kind you put out once and leave alone.

And the kind you can move around the house all October to mildly amuse yourself.

This skeleton falls into the second category.

Sitting at the dining table. Waiting on the couch. Casually occupying a chair like he pays the mortgage.

Is it necessary?

No.

But I can think of approximately 17 places to put him, and that's usually how trouble starts.

Which is why now, I have 8.

6. Target Spritz Halloween Candy Toss Party Supplies

Sometimes I want beautiful serving pieces I'll use for years.

Other times, I want to throw a Halloween party, put out pizza and not wash 25 plates afterward.

Enter Target.

The Spritz Candy Toss collection has coordinating plates, napkins and a tablecloth. It's colorful, festive and makes the table look like you had a plan.

And then there's the black BOO candy tray.

It literally spells BOO. It holds candy. It costs three dollars.

What was I supposed to do?

The best part? You can put together an entire Halloween party table without spending a fortune or creating another bin of decorations to store for eleven months.

Some things are worth keeping forever.

Some things are worth three dollars.

So, Did I Need Any of This?

No.

But Halloween comes once a year, I love having people over, and sometimes a ghost-covered spoon rest is just a ghost-covered spoon rest.

Some things are worth keeping for years.

Some things make a party easier.

And some things are simply too good to leave at Target.

Make it special. Keep it casual.

And maybe stop buying serving bowls.

No promises.
