Alleegator Tears It Up

Act XL. A little Beyoncé, a lot of Allee.

When your friend turns 40 and happens to be a massive Beyoncé fan, you have two choices: throw a full-blown Cowboy Carter theme party or exercise a little restraint.

We went with restraint. Relatively speaking.

Allee's husband was planning a surprise 40th birthday party for her at Jet Wine Bar in Philadelphia, and I helped him pull it together. The assignment was simple: make it feel like Allee, work in a few Beyoncé references, and avoid turning the whole thing into a costume party.

I designed the invitation around ALLEEGATOR TEARS IT UP. ACT XL, a nod to Beyoncé's Alligator Tears, and carried the idea through to a giant hand-painted banner.

And here's the best part: this one was actually pretty low-effort. By my standards, anyway.

I ordered the cupcakes from a professional (Dayna of Dcup Cakes), while Allee's sister and friend handled the favors. I supplied the invitations, signs, favor vessels, and cupcake tier. Everyone had a job, and everything came together.

Cupcakes by a pro. Display by me. Delegation is a beautiful thing.

My biggest contribution on party day? Approximately 981,902,810 pieces of painter's tape to keep a giant paper banner attached to a stucco wall.

The whole thing was proof that you don't have to make everything yourself to make a party feel special. Sometimes you just need a good idea, a few thoughtful details, and people willing to help pull it together.

And an unreasonable amount of tape.

And that was that. A custom invitation, a few well-placed Beyoncé references, beautiful cupcakes made by someone who actually knows what they're doing, and approximately 98 million pieces of painter's tape holding a banner to a stucco wall.

Nothing wildly complicated. Just a bunch of little details that came together to make Allee feel celebrated.

Make it special. Don't go crazy. (Except maybe with the painter's tape.)

Have a party of your own coming up?

Need help with an invitation, a few creative details, or pulling the whole thing together? That's what The Party Department is for.
